Helping Neighbors This Thanksgiving: How the San Luis Valley Is Coming Together |
Local food banks, churches and volunteers are helping Valley families prepare for the holiday. |

Thanksgiving is traditionally a time for gathering around the table, sharing a meal and appreciating the people in our lives. But for some San Luis Valley households, putting together a holiday dinner can be difficult.
Between grocery bills, limited incomes and everyday household expenses, a traditional Thanksgiving meal can strain a family budget. Local food banks, churches and volunteers are organizing ways to help.
Helping 800 Valley Families Celebrate Thanksgiving
La Puente's Food Bank Network of the San Luis Valley is preparing for its annual Thanksgiving meal distribution, which aims to provide approximately 800 holiday food boxes to families across all six Valley counties.
According to the organization's October 14 announcement, the boxes include a turkey, produce and traditional Thanksgiving ingredients. La Puente says a $31.86 donation can sponsor one family's Thanksgiving meal, with contributions accepted through November 21.
Residents can learn more or contribute at https://lapuentehome.org/giving26. Donations may also be mailed to the Food Bank Network, 802 State Avenue, Alamosa, CO 81101.
Food Assistance Beyond the Holidays
Thanksgiving draws special attention to food insecurity, but local food pantries serve neighbors throughout the year.
La Puente's Food Bank Network operates 15 pantries across the San Luis Valley. Its Alamosa location is at 802 State Avenue, and the network also serves smaller communities across the region.

A Thanksgiving Basket Outreach in Alamosa
San Luis Valley Calvary is organizing a Thanksgiving Basket Outreach and collecting nonperishable foods through November 22. Volunteers are also sought to assemble and deliver baskets on November 24.
Requested items include canned corn, green beans, yams, cranberry sauce, instant potatoes, stuffing, gravy mixes and pumpkin pie filling, along with $25 gift cards to help provide turkeys.
Donations can be brought to San Luis Valley Calvary, 410 McQuerry Street in Alamosa. For details, call 719-589-5526 or visit https://slvcalvary.org/event/thanksgiving-baskets/.
Small Acts of Kindness Make a Difference
Helping a neighbor does not have to mean making a large donation. A few pantry items, a grocery gift card, an afternoon volunteering or simply sharing information about available assistance can make a difference.
Residents interested in volunteering with La Puente can contact its Volunteer Coordination Office at 719-587-3499. Anyone seeking food assistance can begin by contacting the Food Bank Network for the nearest pantry and current distribution information.
The Spirit of Thanksgiving in the Valley
From Alamosa to the smaller towns and rural communities across the San Luis Valley, Thanksgiving offers another opportunity to lend a hand.
The holiday may be celebrated around the dinner table, but its spirit reaches well beyond the meal itself. Helping a neighbor enjoy the holiday is one way to make that spirit tangible.
