About The San Luis Valley Beat
A Little About Me and How This All Started
Frank Flohr, Publisher of The San Luis Valley Beat.

My name is Frank Flohr, and I'm the person behind The San Luis Valley Beat.

My Colorado story began in 1991 when I moved to Salida, where I spent my first ten years. From there, I made my way to the San Luis Valley, settling initially in Villa Grove.

Over the years, I've lived in several communities throughout the Valley, eventually purchasing a home and settling down in Monte Vista in 2019.

After retiring, I found myself looking for something interesting and worthwhile to occupy my time. At 73, I wasn't particularly interested in sitting around doing nothing.

One day, I came across something about starting a local newsletter, and the idea caught my attention.

I thought, why not give it a try?

But I didn't want to create just another version of the publications already serving the Valley. I wanted to offer something a little different — a place where readers could find local news, community events, interesting stories, history, business spotlights, and useful everyday information, all in one place.

And that's how The San Luis Valley Beat got its start.

What began as a retirement project has grown into a weekly newsletter and website that keep me busy researching, writing, discovering new things, and sharing them with readers.

The San Luis Valley Beat isn't backed by a large media company, and there isn't a newsroom full of reporters behind it. It's an independently operated publication that I put together because I enjoy doing it and believe there's room for something different in our community.

My goal isn't to replace the Valley's established news outlets. It's to complement what's already available by offering another perspective and bringing attention to stories, places, people, and information that readers might otherwise overlook.

A Word About AI and How I Put This Together

I believe in being upfront with my readers, so there's something else worth mentioning: I use artificial intelligence as part of producing The San Luis Valley Beat.

AI helps me research topics, organize information, develop articles, edit content, and put together the weekly newsletter. For someone running a publication independently, these tools make it possible to accomplish things that would otherwise require considerably more time and resources.

But AI doesn't run The San Luis Valley Beat. I do.

I decide which stories to pursue, what information is worth sharing, how articles are presented, and what ultimately gets published. I work with information from official sources, public records, local organizations, and other available resources, and I make an effort to check facts and provide reliable information.

AI isn't perfect, and neither am I. Mistakes can happen, and when they do, I believe in correcting them.

I know some people have strong opinions about AI-generated content, and that's fine. My focus is on the quality and usefulness of what I publish, not simply which tools helped produce it.

I see AI as another tool, much like the computer, internet, and publishing software that have changed how information is gathered and shared.

The responsibility for what appears in The San Luis Valley Beat ultimately rests with me.

Looking Ahead

After more than two decades of calling the San Luis Valley home, I'm still discovering things about this remarkable place.

And that's part of what makes putting together The San Luis Valley Beat so enjoyable.

I hope to continue growing the publication into a useful community resource — somewhere readers can discover local businesses, learn about the Valley's history, find upcoming events, keep up with important developments, and perhaps discover something they didn't know before.

Thanks for reading and being part of it.
