KØSLV – The San Luis Valley Amateur Radio Association

In a region where wide open spaces and rugged terrain are part of everyday life, communication matters. That’s where KØSLV – the San Luis Valley Amateur Radio Association steps in.

Serving the San Luis Valley and surrounding communities, KØSLV brings together licensed amateur (“ham”) radio operators and enthusiasts who share a passion for communication, public service, and technical learning.

More Than a Hobby

Amateur radio is more than chatting over the airwaves — it’s a vital communication resource during emergencies. When cell service drops or internet connections fail, ham radio operators can step in to provide reliable communication links.

Members of KØSLV:

  • Operate local repeaters serving the Valley
  • Support emergency preparedness and disaster response efforts
  • Mentor new operators and help with FCC licensing
  • Participate in community events and public service communications

Why It Matters in the San Luis Valley

The San Luis Valley’s rural landscape makes strong communication networks especially important. Amateur radio provides:

    • Backup communication during severe weather
    • Support during wildfire season
    • Reliable contact during search and rescue operations
    • A way for isolated residents to stay connected

In an area known for self-reliance and community spirit, ham radio continues to be a trusted tool.

Education & Community

KØSLV also serves as a learning hub for radio technology and electronics. Whether someone is brand new to amateur radio or a seasoned operator, the association offers opportunities to:

    • Study for Technician, General, and Extra class licenses
    • Participate in “Field Day” events
    • Experiment with digital modes and new radio technologies
    • Connect with fellow operators locally and worldwide

Getting Involved

Interested residents can attend meetings, listen in on local nets, or begin studying for their FCC amateur license. With supportive members and decades of collective experience, KØSLV is welcoming to newcomers of all ages.

Bottom Line: KØSLV is more than a radio club — it’s a resilient communication network, a technical learning community, and a quiet but critical part of the Valley’s emergency preparedness system.
