Public radio in the San Luis Valley

KRZA, the sole public radio station in Colorado's San Luis Valley, is launching its Spring Fund Drive from April 1 to April 10, aiming to bolster financial support and community engagement to sustain its operations.

In August 2025, KRZA faced a significant financial setback when federal funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting was slashed by 50%. By November, this funding was entirely eliminated, leaving the station in a precarious position. General Manager Gerald Rodriguez expressed the station's determination to persevere, stating, "We are doing everything we can to make sure this resource stays live."

Established in October 1985, KRZA has been a vital voice for the community, particularly serving the area's Hispanic population. The station's inception was the result of a decade-long effort by local women who recognized the need for a platform that reflected their culture and concerns. Despite receiving historical designation in early 2025, the station continues to grapple with operational costs. Rodriguez noted, "We had to cut staff down to the bare minimum and we had to cut some of our programming. We just want to keep getting the word out."

The broader landscape for public media has been challenging. In July 2025, federal lawmakers reduced funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, eliminating approximately half of KRZA's budget. This move has had a profound impact on small stations like KRZA, which operate with minimal staff and resources. In response, the Public Media Company launched a "bridge fund" to assist local stations in navigating these financial challenges. As of late January 2026, the fund had raised $66.5 million toward its $100 million goal, providing temporary relief to affected stations.

KRZA's commitment to the community remains steadfast. The station continues to provide local news and weather updates to residents, many of whom lack reliable internet access. During emergencies, KRZA serves as a primary source of information, underscoring its importance in the region. Rodriguez emphasized, "KRZA is a precious gem and resource for so many of our listeners who do not have access to digital news outlets or the internet. We are a community voice and we are one of not many still out there."
