Just north of Monte Vista, tucked among tall cottonwoods and quiet country roads, sits one of the most historic veterans sites in all of Colorado — the Veterans Community Living Center at Homelake. For generations in the San Luis Valley, Homelake has stood as a place of remembrance, honor, and service.
This Memorial Day, the community will once again gather to remember the men and women who gave their lives in military service to the United States. A public Memorial Day service will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the Homelake Veterans Cemetery near Monte Vista.
Founded in 1889 as the Colorado Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home, Homelake became Colorado’s first veterans home and has cared for generations of veterans for more than a century. The cemetery grounds remain one of the San Luis Valley’s most meaningful places of remembrance, with more than 1,600 veterans laid to rest there.
For many Valley residents, attending the Memorial Day ceremony at Homelake has become a yearly tradition. The service offers an opportunity for veterans, families, and community members to come together in reflection and gratitude.
