Teacher award nominations in San Luis Valley

Recognizing outstanding educators through colorado teacher of the year and san luis valley teacher nominations

The Colorado Department of Education is now accepting nominations for the 2027 Colorado Teacher of the Year award.

This prestigious program honors educators who exhibit excellence in teaching and make a significant impact on their students, schools, and communities.

Residents across the state are encouraged to nominate outstanding teachers for this recognition.

Notably, in the San Luis Valley, Elisamaria Heredia, a dedicated educator at Alamosa Elementary School, was named a finalist for the 2026 award.

Her commitment to multilingual learners has set a high standard for teaching excellence in the region.

To be eligible, nominees must be public school teachers working in state-accredited K-12 schools and plan to continue teaching throughout the 2027-28 school year.

The nomination window is open until March 20, after which nominees will be invited to complete the application process.

The application period runs from March 2 to April 13, with virtual office hours available to assist applicants.

Semifinalists will be announced on May 22, finalists in early September, and the winner will be revealed in the fall.

In addition to the state-level recognition, local awards play a crucial role in celebrating educators.

For instance, the St. Vrain Valley Schools Education Foundation's Celebration of Excellence honors exceptional teachers from each school within the district.

Community members are invited to nominate educators who inspire and innovate, shaping the future of their students.

As Education Commissioner Dr. Susana Córdova emphasized, "Colorado’s teachers make an extraordinary difference in classrooms and communities every day."

Recognizing these educators not only honors their dedication but also highlights the profound impact they have on the state's educational landscape.

Residents are encouraged to participate in these nomination processes to celebrate and support the educators who have made a meaningful difference in their lives and communities.

By acknowledging their efforts, we reinforce the value of education and the vital role teachers play in shaping the future.
