The Rio Grande County Museum in Del Norte, Colorado, is set to reopen its doors on March 6, 2026, marking the start of an exciting new season. Kicking off the festivities, the museum will host a captivating presentation by renowned historian Andrew Gulliford, who will delve into the life and legacy of the 26th U.S. President, Theodore Roosevelt. This engaging event is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the museum's location on 580 Oak Street.

Dr. Gulliford, celebrated for his dynamic storytelling, will transport attendees through Roosevelt's adventurous journey—from his explorations in the rugged terrains of South Dakota to his pivotal role in conservation efforts across the nation. A highlight of the discussion will be Roosevelt's 1908 designation of the Wheeler Geological Area as Colorado's first National Monument, underscoring his commitment to preserving natural landmarks.

The Wheeler Geological Area, named after Capt. George M. Wheeler who surveyed the region in 1874, stands as a testament to the area's rich geological history. This 25-million-year-old formation has attracted visitors for over a century and remains a significant point of interest in the San Luis Valley.

In addition to this special event, the Rio Grande County Museum offers a variety of adult workshops throughout the year. These programs range from local rock art tours, conducted in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, to presentations by local historians and archaeologists. Such initiatives aim to deepen the community's connection to the region's rich history and cultural heritage.

For those interested in attending "A Night with Teddy" or participating in upcoming workshops, the museum encourages early registration due to limited seating. While general admission is free, donations are appreciated to support ongoing programs and events. For more information, contact the museum at 719.657.2847 or via email at rgmuseum@riograndecounty.org.

As the museum prepares to welcome visitors back, the community of Del Norte eagerly anticipates a season filled with enriching experiences that celebrate the unique history and culture of the San Luis Valley.
