Growing rye to maturity demands approximately 12 inches of water, compared to the 18-26 inches needed for other grains. Moreover, rye's deep root system enhances soil health by preventing erosion and improving nutrient retention, making it an ideal choice for the valley's arid conditions.
The project's impact is already evident. In its inaugural year, local farmers planted 4,500 acres of winter rye, leading to an estimated water savings of 4,670 acre-feet. This shift not only conserves vital water resources but also opens new economic avenues for farmers. By partnering with local businesses, the Rye Resurgence Project is creating a robust market for rye-based products, from artisan breads to craft spirits. Notably, collaborations with distilleries have resulted in the development of rye-based gins, further diversifying the region's agricultural output.
Beyond rye, the San Luis Valley is witnessing a broader embrace of organic farming. Jones Farms Organics, a fourth-generation family farm, exemplifies this trend. Specializing in organic potatoes, heirloom grains, and cover crops, they prioritize nutrient-dense soil and sustainable practices. Their commitment has positioned them as leaders in the valley's organic movement.
Similarly, Sol Mountain Farm in the valley's foothills is dedicated to regenerative agriculture. Since its establishment in 2013, the farm has offered beyond-organic vegetables, heritage pork, and herbal products. Their holistic approach includes permaculture landscaping services and educational events, fostering a deeper connection between the community and sustainable farming.
The momentum towards organic farming is further supported by organizations like SOIL Sangre de Cristo. This group provides interest-free loans to local food producers employing regenerative methods. In 2025, they awarded loans to three small producers, underscoring the community's commitment to sustainable agriculture.
