In a significant development for Monte Vista High School athletics, standout athletes Azariah Hurtado and Kelby Mondragon have committed to continue their football careers at Adams State University. The signing ceremony took place last Wednesday, marking a proud moment for the Monte Vista community.
Hurtado expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "I think Adams State is a good program. I'm ready to build up with them." Mondragon echoed similar sentiments, highlighting his appreciation for the program's proximity and the coaching staff. "I like the program," he said. "I like the coaches and teamwork, and it's close to home. I grew up watching them and wanted to be one of them."
Both athletes have been instrumental in leading the Pirates to the state football playoffs in recent years. Notably, Monte Vista clinched the South-Central League championship in 2024, a testament to their dedication and skill.
Demonstrating versatility, Hurtado also excels in basketball and baseball, while Mondragon contributes to the basketball, baseball, and track teams. At Adams State, Hurtado is set to play as a receiver, and Mondragon will take on roles as a long snapper and slot receiver.
Monte Vista coach Manny Wasinger shared his excitement, stating, "We're excited for Azariah and Kelby. We've had four players sign with Adams State over the last two years. I'm glad for coach Gallas to give them a chance."
Joining Hurtado and Mondragon at Adams State are fellow Monte Vista alumni Alex Felix and Kaden Madrid, both of whom graduated in 2025.
In other Monte Vista sports news, the school's baseball team is making strides in the Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division. The Mustangs recently secured an 11-1 victory over Rancho San Juan, with sophomore pitcher Chris Bautista delivering an impressive performance, allowing just one run and recording nine strikeouts over six innings.
