Fire Strikes the Heart of Villa Grove

For many travelers, Villa Grove is a small community along U.S. Highway 285—a place to stop, stretch your legs, or browse local art before continuing over Poncha Pass or into the San Luis Valley. But for those who have called Villa Grove home, it is much more than a dot on the map. It is a close-knit community where nearly every building has a story and every business has a familiar face behind it.

On the evening of Wednesday, August 5, that sense of history suffered a heartbreaking blow as a fast-moving fire swept through the Always Azul Pottery complex and neighboring buildings on the historic Jackman property. Thick black smoke could be seen for miles as firefighters battled intense flames that quickly consumed several structures.

The fire forced the closure of U.S. Highway 285 while firefighters from the Northern Saguache County Fire Protection District, assisted by neighboring departments, worked to contain the blaze. Early reports indicated that limited water availability made an already difficult firefight even more challenging.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, but for a town the size of Villa Grove, the loss extends far beyond the buildings themselves.

Always Azul Pottery had become one of Villa Grove's signature destinations. Visitors from across Colorado and around the country stopped to admire the colorful pottery, browse the galleries, and experience the unique character that made the property a landmark along Highway 285. It was one of those places that helped define Villa Grove for generations of travelers.

For me, this story is deeply personal.

I lived in Villa Grove for ten years. I knew these places, I knew the people who poured their lives into them. These weren't simply businesses to me—they were neighbors, friends, and familiar places that became part of everyday life.

Watching photographs of flames consuming buildings I remember so well is difficult to put into words. Like so many current and former residents, I can't help but think about the conversations shared there, the friendships formed, and the memories created over the years. Those are things no fire can erase.

As investigators begin the task of determining what caused the fire, the community now turns toward recovery. Villa Grove has always been a resilient town, and if its history has shown anything, it's that neighbors come together when they're needed most.

The San Luis Valley Beat extends its heartfelt thoughts to the property owners, business owners, firefighters, volunteers, and everyone affected by this devastating fire. While the loss is significant, so too is the spirit of the people who call Villa Grove home.
