Despite being outnumbered and less equipped, Mexican troops led by General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated the French army in the city of Puebla.

While it wasn’t the end of the conflict, the victory became a powerful symbol of resilience, unity, and national pride.

Is It Mexico’s Independence Day?

Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day—that holiday is celebrated on September 16th. In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is mainly observed in the state of Puebla, where the battle took place, and is not a major nationwide holiday.

Cinco de Mayo has taken on a larger life here in the United States, especially in communities with strong Mexican-American heritage.
