Cinco de Mayo: What It Is—and Why We Celebrate It

Every year on May 5th, you’ll see celebrations filled with vibrant colors, delicious food, music, and festive spirit. But what exactly is Cinco de Mayo—and why do we celebrate it?

The History Behind Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

At the time, Mexico was struggling financially and facing pressure from European powers. France, under Emperor Napoleon III, attempted to establish control over Mexico. Despite being outnumbered and less equipped, Mexican troops led by General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated the French army in the city of Puebla.

While it wasn’t the end of the conflict, the victory became a powerful symbol of resilience, unity, and national pride.

Is It Mexico’s Independence Day?

This is one of the biggest misconceptions.

Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day—that holiday is celebrated on September 16th. In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is mainly observed in the state of Puebla, where the battle took place, and is not a major nationwide holiday.

Why It’s Celebrated in the United States

Cinco de Mayo has taken on a larger life here in the United States, especially in communities with strong Mexican-American heritage.

The celebration began gaining popularity in the U.S. during the 20th century as a way to honor Mexican culture and history, celebrate heritage and identity, and bring communities together.

Today, it’s widely recognized as a celebration of Mexican culture, often featuring traditional foods like tacos, tamales, and enchiladas, along with music, dancing, festivals, parades, and community gatherings.

More Than Just a Party

While Cinco de Mayo is often associated with food and festivities, at its core, it’s about something deeper—resilience against the odds.

It’s a reminder of how determination, unity, and pride can overcome even the toughest challenges. That message continues to resonate today, making the holiday meaningful beyond its historical roots.
