Bird Watching with SLV GO! This Spring

Spring migration is arriving in the San Luis Valley, and SLV GO! (San Luis Valley Great Outdoors) is inviting the community to experience it through a series of guided bird-watching outings.

These walks are designed for all experience levels—whether you’re a longtime birder or simply curious about the birds and wildlife that pass through our valley each year. Outings are relaxed, educational, and focused on observing birds in their natural habitat while learning basic identification tips and seasonal migration patterns.

Where the outings take place

SLV GO! plans bird-watching sessions at some of the valley’s best wildlife areas and trails, including:

  • Smith State Wildlife Area
  • Shriver Wright State Wildlife Area
  • Russell Lakes State Wildlife Area
  • Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge
  • Inner & Outer Oxbow Trails
  • HOMELAKE

These locations sit along major migration routes, making spring a great time to spot a mix of waterfowl, songbirds, and raptors—especially in the early morning and early evening hours.

What to bring

  • Weather-appropriate layers (it can change fast in the valley)
  • Water and sun protection
  • Binoculars if you have them (beginners are welcome without gear)

RSVP

SLV GO! asks participants to RSVP in advance:

If you’ve been looking for a simple way to get outside, learn something new, and enjoy the changing season, bird watching with SLV GO! is a rewarding way to connect with the natural rhythms of the San Luis Valley.
