Guidance on San Luis Valley seed packages and seed mailing scams |
Residents of the San Luis Valley have recently reported receiving unsolicited seed packages in the mail, a phenomenon that has raised significant concern among agricultural and environmental officials.
These mysterious packages, often labeled as containing jewelry or other items, may harbor invasive species, pests, or plant diseases that could threaten Colorado's native ecosystems and agricultural economy.
According to recent reports, similar incidents have occurred in various parts of the country, including the Central Coast, where residents received unsolicited seed shipments from foreign sources.
In response to these incidents, the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), is urging residents to exercise caution.
Wondirad Gebru, director of CDA’s Plant Industry Division, emphasized the potential risks, stating that the introduction of invasive species or plant diseases poses a significant threat to the state's biodiversity and farming industry.
To protect the environment and agriculture, officials recommend the following steps if you receive an unsolicited seed package:
1. **Do Not Open the Seed Packets**: Keep the seeds sealed in their original packaging and place all materials, including the mailing label, inside a sealable plastic bag.
2. **Do Not Plant the Seeds**: Avoid exposing the seeds to soil, plants, or water sources, as they may be a potential biohazard.
3. **Report and Submit the Package**: Contact the CDA Plant Industry Division at (303) 869-9052 or email cda_nursery@state.co.us to report the package. After reporting, mail the sealed plastic bag containing the seeds and all packaging to:
USDA APHIS PPQ 3950 North Lewiston Street, Suite 104 Aurora, CO 80011-1561
State and federal officials will conduct thorough examinations to ensure these shipments are safely processed.
It's crucial to handle these packages with care. If you must handle them, wear disposable gloves. If you notice any chemical or unusual odors, avoid inhaling them and move the package to a well-ventilated area. Never discard unsolicited seeds in the trash or compost.
This issue has been recurring, with similar reports in 2020 and 2025.
For any questions regarding unsolicited seeds in Colorado, please contact the CDA Plant Industry Division at (303) 869-9052 or email cda_nursery@state.co.us. |
