Solar development in the San Luis Valley

spud valley energy center project in the San Luis Valley shaping solar energy in the region

The San Luis Valley is witnessing a transformative shift as the Spud Valley Energy Center progresses, marking a significant milestone in the region's renewable energy landscape.

Located near Mosca and Hooper, this ambitious project spans 2,578 acres and aims to generate 600 megawatts of solar power, complemented by an equal capacity in battery storage.

This development is particularly timely, given the area's ongoing challenges with water scarcity, which have led many agricultural producers to seek alternative land uses.

By repurposing former croplands, the Spud Valley project not only addresses environmental concerns but also offers economic opportunities for local landowners.

In November 2025, the Alamosa County Commissioners advanced the project by approving waivers to certain regulations within the required 1041 permit, recognizing its potential to bolster the region's energy infrastructure.

However, the existing power grid's capacity presents a challenge.

As noted by Alamosa County Land Use Director Richard Hubler, the current infrastructure isn't equipped to support a project of this magnitude.

Consequently, discussions are underway to enhance transmission capabilities, ensuring the efficient distribution of the generated power.

Construction is slated to commence in 2027, with the initial phase delivering 200 megawatts each of solar energy and battery storage by the end of 2029.

Subsequent phases will incrementally increase capacity, aligning with Colorado's goal of achieving 80% renewable energy by 2030.

As the Spud Valley Energy Center takes shape, it stands as a testament to the San Luis Valley's commitment to sustainable development and its pivotal role in the state's renewable energy future.
