Sheriff Anne Robinson Seeks Reelection in Rio Grande County

Incumbent Sheriff Anne Robinson announces bid for second term amid recent public safety challenges

Anne Robinson, the current sheriff of Rio Grande County, has officially filed for reelection in the upcoming 2026 election cycle.

Robinson, who stepped into the role in July 2022 following the retirement of former Sheriff Don McDonald, is aiming for a second term as the county's chief law enforcement officer.

According to the Colorado Secretary of State's election database, a candidate committee titled the "Committee to Elect Anne Robinson Rio Grande County Sheriff" is now active for the 2026 cycle, confirming her intent to appear on the ballot.

With over 35 years of law enforcement experience, Robinson has emphasized her commitment to transparency, community safety, and strengthening trust between the sheriff's office and local residents.

During her tenure, she has overseen jail operations, participated in multi-county discussions on regional justice solutions, and responded publicly to high-profile incidents across the San Luis Valley.

Recent events have underscored the challenges facing law enforcement in the region.

In November 2025, a school bus accident occurred in South Fork, a town within Rio Grande County.

Fortunately, none of the 13 students or the driver sustained injuries.

The bus collided with abandoned railroad tracks after leaving the roadway on a snow-covered Colorado 160, causing it to turn on its side.

Additionally, a coordinated multi-agency operation in November 2025 led to the arrest of William Redden, a 33-year-old male wanted on charges of felony stalking and threats against court personnel.

During the attempted apprehension at Redden's residence in Rio Grande County, he presented a handgun upon contact with law enforcement, leading to a 40-minute standoff before his peaceful surrender.

While no formal campaign website or public campaign platform has been published yet, Robinson is expected to begin public outreach in the coming months as the election year progresses.

The Rio Grande County Sheriff's race will be on the ballot in November 2026.

As of now, no other candidates have officially declared.

Stay tuned for more coverage as the race develops, including potential candidate forums and campaign updates.
