San Luis Valley politics and issues at the Alamosa candidate forum

Insights from colorado statewide candidates and the local political scene

The Alamosa County Democratic Party is set to host a candidate forum on Saturday, February 21, at Society Hall in Alamosa.

This event offers residents a unique opportunity to engage directly with Democratic candidates vying for statewide offices, focusing on issues pertinent to rural Colorado and the San Luis Valley.

Eleven candidates are scheduled to participate, representing seven key positions:

U.S. Senate: Julie Gonzales

U.S. House District 03: Alex Kelloff

Governor: Carmen Broesder and Antonio Martinez

Colorado House District 62: Matthew Martinez

Attorney General: Michael Dougherty and David Seligman

Secretary of State: Amanda Gonzalez and Jessie Danielson

State Treasurer: John Mikos and Brianna Titone

Notably, Julie Gonzales is challenging incumbent Senator John Hickenlooper for the Democratic nomination in the upcoming primary on June 30.

Similarly, Alex Kelloff aims to unseat Republican Representative Jeff Hurd in the November midterm election.

Organizers have indicated that additional Democratic candidates may join the forum as their schedules permit.

The event will be moderated by Andrew Yaste, treasurer of the Colorado Democratic Party.

The forum is scheduled from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, with doors opening at 1:30 PM.

Admission is free, and attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure seating.

As the San Luis Valley continues to navigate challenges such as healthcare access and economic development, this forum provides a platform for residents to voice their concerns and hear candidates' plans firsthand.

Engaging in such events is crucial for shaping the future of the region and ensuring that local issues are addressed at the state level.

For those interested in participating in the upcoming elections, it's essential to ensure voter registration is current.

Colorado's primary elections are slated for June 30, with the general election following on November 3.

Active civic engagement remains a cornerstone of a thriving democracy, and events like this candidate forum play a pivotal role in fostering informed voter participation.
