Bill to Prevent Out-of-State Farms From Using Colorado Labels Passes Senate |
Highlighting the importance of the Colorado proud label and San Luis Valley farm products |
In a decisive move to protect local agriculture, the Colorado Senate has passed bipartisan legislation aimed at curbing false advertising in the state's agricultural sector. This measure specifically targets the misuse of the "Colorado Proud" label, ensuring that only products genuinely grown or produced within the state can bear this designation.
The "Colorado Proud" program, established in 1999, serves as a beacon for consumers seeking authentic local products. With over 2,500 members, including farmers, ranchers, and food manufacturers, the program's logo signifies products that are truly Colorado-grown. However, instances of out-of-state products falsely claiming this label have undermined consumer trust and disadvantaged local producers.
Senator Dylan Roberts, D-Frisco, emphasized the significance of this legislation, stating that consumers deserve to trust the authenticity of the "Colorado Proud" label. He highlighted the importance of supporting local farmers and ranchers who produce high-quality products within the state.
The San Luis Valley, renowned for its agricultural output, stands to benefit significantly from this legislation. Known for producing staples like potatoes and barley, the region's farmers have faced challenges from droughts and market fluctuations. By ensuring that only genuine Colorado products carry the "Colorado Proud" label, the new law aims to bolster the valley's agricultural economy and protect its farmers from unfair competition.
This legislative action reflects a broader commitment to preserving the integrity of Colorado's agricultural industry. By cracking down on false advertising, the state reinforces its support for local producers and provides consumers with the confidence that products labeled as "Colorado Proud" are indeed homegrown.
HB26-1031 now heads to the Governor for his signature. |
