Learn about horse adoption South Fork and the mission of Second Chance Ranch

In the heart of the San Luis Valley, the town of South Fork has become a sanctuary for horses in need, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Second Chance Ranch.

Founded by Amanda Hurley and her husband, the ranch offers a haven for abused, abandoned, and wild horses, providing them with a second chance at life.

"After spending a decade out west, we returned to my husband's roots in Alamosa and established Second Chance Ranch," Hurley shared.

"With a lifetime of experience in interactive horse training and rescue work, we launched this endeavor in 2022 and are currently pursuing our 501(c)(3) status."

The ranch's mission is to rehabilitate and train horses, preparing them for adoption into loving homes.

Hurley emphasized the importance of matching horses with suitable adopters, ensuring both parties are equipped for a successful partnership.

"We focus on rehabilitating abused and neglected horses, nurturing their physical and emotional well-being, and equipping them with the skills needed to find lifelong human companions," she explained.

"Additionally, we gentle and train wild mustangs, providing them the opportunity to find their forever homes."

Beyond the physical rehabilitation, Hurley highlights the therapeutic benefits horses offer to humans.

"There's something profoundly healing about being around these animals," she noted.

"They seem to be created to soothe our souls and brighten the world."

As Second Chance Ranch progresses toward non-profit status, community support remains vital.

Recent fundraising efforts have been successful, with events like the December 13 fundraiser raising $1,900 to support the ranch's operations.

"Our success is measured not only by the number of horses we save but also by the positive impact within the equine community," Hurley stated.

"By rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming horses, we aim to set a precedent for responsible horse ownership and highlight the immense rewards of providing these remarkable animals with the second chance they deserve."
