Updates from neighborhood watch South Fork and Rio Grande county sheriff |
For over a year, the South Fork Police Department (SFPD) and the Rio Grande County Sheriff's Office (RGSO) have been collaborating on a community-wide neighborhood watch program, uniting residents to address local concerns.
During monthly meetings, law enforcement officials present crime statistics and reports from the previous month, offering residents a clear overview of local activity. These sessions also provide a platform for community members to voice concerns and engage directly with officers.
In a recent meeting, SFPD Chief OJ Pierce highlighted several incidents, including a reported burglary that was later identified as a maintenance staff entry, an unattended death, a hit-and-run, and an attempted suicide where officers successfully intervened. The department responded to 255 calls, with 160 related to traffic, 49 case reports—an increase from previous years—and 91 citations, noted as lower compared to prior periods.
The RGSO reported two assault cases, two instances of criminal mischief, two property damage reports, an escape, four fraud cases, two obstructions of officers, one theft, one traffic violation leading to an arrest, ten warrant arrests, one burglary, five theft investigations, and 16 warrant events.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on identity theft prevention. Residents were advised to contact law enforcement immediately upon discovering identity theft. Resources are available through identitytheft.gov, which offers guidance on reporting to the Federal Trade Commission, notifying creditors, placing fraud alerts, and freezing credit.
The South Fork Neighborhood Watch encourages community participation. Meetings are held every second Wednesday of the month at the South Fork Community Building and are accessible via Google Meet upon request.
